The More Things Change, the More We Flex

Vol 1, No. 30 June 6, 2020

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

For those parents who are ready for someone else to entertain their children South Miami's Gibson-Bethel Community Center has just announced the opening of Summer Camp.

And on weekends Public Swim will start at the pool June 19.

Swimming lessons are being offered starting on June 15.

All these activities require that the groups be small. Notice that an appointment is need if one wants to go swimming on weekend afternoons. Without an appointment, there is guarantee that one will be allowed to swim - the pool may have already reached its capacity limit.

FUTURE FLOOD PREVENTION

The Army Corps of Engineers has conducted a study about how to protect the Miami-Dade coast. There will be two public meetings where this study will be discussed. "The draft feasibility and environmental impact statement for Army Corps Back Bay Study HAS BEEN RELEASED. The Back Bay study is investigating solutions that will reduce the damage and risks from flooding that comes from storm surges associated with hurricanes and tropical storms amplified by sea level rise. The study focuses on critical infrastructure and areas of the county that are vulnerable to coastal storms."

The news release from the Army Corps of Engineers gives details about the Tuesday and Thursday virtual meetings. More information is in the County Regulatory and Economic Resources Department's news release.

BIPARTISAN PAYROLL PROTECTION PROGRAM (PPP) FLEXIBILITY ACT

In order to make it more accessible and usable for the vulnerable small businesses that need it the most, the bill makes the PPP program more flexible in the following key ways:

- Allowing loan forgiveness for expenses beyond the 8-week covered

period to 24 weeks and extending the rehiring deadline.

- Increasing the current limitation on the use of loan proceeds for

non-payroll expenses from 25 percent to 40 percent.

- Extending the program from June 30 to December 31.

- Extending loan terms from two years to five years.

- Ensuring full access to payroll tax deferment for businesses that take PPP

loans.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY CURFEW

As of June 5th, the County curfew is now 10 pm.

VIRTUAL MEETINGS

Municipalities in Miami-Dade County may continue to operate using virtual meetings through June 30.

CITY of SOUTH MIAMI STREET PARKING

Late next week on-street parking will no longer be free. However, a free hour will be added to however much time a person purchases. This extra-hour benefit will continue for six months.

FOOD DISTRIBUTION

As I said, the more things change, the more we flex.

Keep healthy, stay safe.
