CENSUS
I know I have written about this several times. Today I read an item that clearly demonstrated how important a complete census is for a small city like South Miami. Our share of the 45% the County is receiving from the Federal government depends on the number of residents who completed the Census 10 years ago. Our future share of monies will depend on how many residents complete the Census this year. Here's how it was worded by Congresswoman Mucarsel-Powell:
REP. MUCARSEL-POWELL RELEASES NEW CONGRESSIONAL STAFF REPORT HIGHLIGHTING DIRE COSTS OF CENSUS UNDERCOUNT FOR FLORIDA’S 26TH DISTRICT
[The 26th district contains all of Monroe County
as well as a portion of south-west Miami-Dade County.]
“The importance of the Census to our community in South Florida cannot be overstated. Counting everyone in Florida’s 26th district means that we receive the federal funding we need to build roads, fund community health centers, schools, hospitals, foster care, public transit, and job programs. And the Census has taken a greater importance in light of the coronavirus pandemic that has ravaged our public health and economy. Our communities in South Florida are vulnerable to being undercounted in the Census – language, socio-economic factors, immigration status makes our community harder to count, but it can and must be done. Everyone living in Florida’s 26th district, no matter your immigration status, needs to be counted. You count, and your kids count. Let’s ensure that they have the resources they need to brighten their futures.”
Kirstenwood - I have no easy words to say to anyone about the violence and ugliness of this past week. I abhor violence whether it is to innocent or to possibly guilty people. That goes for violence between white and white, brown and white, black and white, brown and brown, black and black, or any shade of skin color with any shade of skin color. Violence between people who have different religious beliefs, different cultures, different ages, different languages, different sexual identities - it's all abhorrent. Violence against property is inexcusable and awful.
I am going to quote the most eloquent and moving (for me - to tears) words I know about violence:
"The ultimate weakness of violence is that…
Mayor Phillips, what do you have to say to our black residents in this horrible week?
