Vol. 6 No. 1 (a) 21 February 2025

THE NEWEST PARK

The beautifully shaded plot of trees on the SE corner of 61st Court and 64th Terrace has been set aside as a passive park. That spot is designated a "passive park" which means that no structures will be built upon it, and that it will be allowed to be a green space [with, maybe, a picnic table or two]. The Commission of the City of South Miami passed the resolution with a 4-to-1* vote on February 4, less than two weeks before Dr. Price died.

* Commissioner Bonich voted NAY.

TWO MAJOR LOSSES TO SOUTH MIAMI

Dr. Anna Price died on February 12. She had been a very active contributor to the City. She participated on numerous boards and committees. While she was serving on the Commission, she was Mayor for a year (1997-98). I remember her as an outspoken, clear, to-the-point advocate not only for the Marshall Williamson area, but for the well-being of all the residents of South Miami. A more detailed list of her accomplishments were presented to the Commission:

"Dr. Anna Price has served as a Commissioner and Mayor for the City of South Miami and her current and past community activities and involvement spans over 20 agencies/organizations including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Concerned Citizens and Clergy, the Marshall Williamson Scholarship Committee, Women’s Commission of Miami-Dade County, Planned Parenthood, YWCA, Orange Bowl Foundation, and Dade County Commission Youth Crime Task Force.

Dr. Anna Price has multiple patents and publications and has received several awards, most recently including “Seniors Who Serve”, Miami-Dade Commission, 2022 and ‘Woman of Distinction”, Women’s History Coalition of Miami-Dade County, 2018. She has worked tirelessly as an educator and mentor, inspired so many people, and is loved in the South Miami community and beyond."

For me, the part about her being loved in the South Miami Community and beyond is what seems the most real, and why her loss is so sad.

The other major loss is Gail Coachman Alexander, artist par excellence. She died just before her very good friend, Anna. Gail helped to design and guide the painting of the Unity Wall that boarders part of 62 Avenue.

Dedicated painters, Gail working, Gail (and me) giving instructions to young painter on how to make palm prints.

IT'S THAT TIME

This year I am working at four of the above sites: South Miami, of course, Homestead, South Dade and Pinecrest. I always enjoy helping the people who come with their tax papers. I always enjoy working with the team of volunteers. And I especially enjoy seeing my friends and neighbors when they show up. Come on by!

CLAIMING DAMAGE

Phil Stoddard shared the following announcement about a series of classes:

The Pinecrest Community Center is at 5855 Killian Drive (SW 112 Street)

ONE GOOD THING

The Urban Development Boundary has been preserved [for now]. The expansion of the boundary to permit the development of a huge warehouse complex has been halted. An article about this success can be read by clicking here.

May you keep healthy and stay safe!
