New Normal, New Meaning, New Management

Vol.1, No. 25 May 21, 2020

SECOND VIRTUAL COMMISSION MEETING

Second it may have been, but it was a first in many respects. It may have been the first for some, because many more people joined the meeting and commented than in the previous meeting. It was the first meeting that I have chaired that lasted four hours. The three revised SoMi Market (Winn Dixie) items passed their first reading. And the first new City Manager in 7.5 years was sworn in just before 11:00 pm.

WELCOME

Welcome to Sharareh Kamali, South Miami's newest and very experienced City Manager. Welcome, too, to Samantha Fraga-Lopez, the new Assistant City Manager. Though her office is not yet physically ready for her to move into, Ms. Kamali has already started to work on tightening the city budget: positions that have been open will be eliminated, however, no employees will be laid off or furloughed.

TEST SITES HAVE RE-OPENED

REOPENING BUSINESS

This is the list of what organizations are allowed to open in Miami-Dade County.

There are many required rules for safety. The New Normal Guide is available by clicking this url: https://326fbfc6-4c55-4f04-8869-d16109ff4162.usrfiles.com/ugd/326fbf_706bfa5a1fc9459984bd0dfb014a4d58.pdf. In it, there are specific instructions for each class of permitted business.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Businesses can order Back-to-Business Boxes from the County. These boxes contain protective gear for employees and patrons. The best way to get information and to order is to click on: https://www.miamidade.gov/global/initiatives/coronavirus/business/business-box.page

THE CENSUS

I know I've been harping on the census. Our percent of response is not as high as it could be: 58.9% Our neighbors are a good bit ahead of us. We're 16th out of 34 Miami-Dade County cities, Pinecrest is 3rd of 34 with 70.0%, and Coral Gables is 9th with 61.5%. That means, when the Federal, State or Country government decides to divide monies proportionally to number of residents, we will not get our fair share. We are particularly low in the Marshall Williamson area where the return is in the 41% - 51% range. So, please encourage everyone you know to complete the Census questionnaire.

HURRICANE SEASON ...

is about to start. Please check your generators, get extra food supplies, and ready yourself for potential storms. Some say this is going to be the worst season we've endured in a long time. The country has sent out its guide. The same information is available at: https://www.miamidade.gov/global/emergency/hurricane/home.page

NEW MEANING

"Don't leave home without it," a one-time familiar advertisement, now has a new meaning. It's not about a card, it's about your mask. Do, PLEASE, wear it whenever you go out to be in a place where other people are likely to be. Wear it to stores, wear it to your doctors' offices, wear it to the Post Office, wear it to the restaurant (until you are safely seated), etc. If there is a spike in our area to the number of people getting sick with COVID-19, the City of South Miami will close businesses and order everyone back to "Sheltering at Home." Let's not let that happen, please.

Keep healthy, and stay safe.
