I have received several flyers that say negative things about the candidates for Commissioner, Group II. I have had phone conversations with each of them, and I become more confused.
I look at the website for the Florida Dept. of State, Division of Elections and see that Miami-Dade Residents United, the committee responsible for two of the negative flyers, has reported that it had no contributions nor expenditures in its short - since Sept. 19th - existence. However, the officers for Miami-Dade Residents United are also officers for Fighting for a Better Miami-Dade. [In August Fighting for a Better Miami-Dade sent out the ugly flyer about Cindy Lerner.] I wonder if funds from one committee are being used to pay for actions attributed to the other. I find it disturbing that people who present themselves as ethical and up-standing men are supported by unidentified others who throw mud.
Just as the flyer about the $65Million Bond came from a Tallahassee entity, so, too, the officers of these two Miami-Dade committees are not located in South Miami; they have offices in Coral Gables. I wonder why people outside of South Miami are spending money to influence the outcome of an election in South Miami.
I am disturbed, also, that what is supposed to be a non-partisan election has become political.
The impact of all this negativity has resulted in my helping to set up an event where South Miami voters can hear and see the candidates in person.
CANDIDATES' FORUM
When: Thursday, October 24 at 6:30 pm
(doors open at 6:15 pm)
Where: Elks Lodge 1676, 6304 SW 78 Street, South Miami
Both the candidates for Commissioner, Group II, will be answering questions that the moderators will have prepared. The overarching goal is to hear what each is likely to support when a proposal comes before the Commission. Basically, what are his hopes for the future of South Miami? This not a debate; it is an opportunity for the candidates to clarify their priorities and preferences.
At this time, the moderators are not supporting either candidate. That emoji represents me. At this time, I do not know which candidate I trust more. Actually, I’m helping to set up this event, because I want to know more about whom I will be electing to the South Miami Commission. And I would like my fellow residents to be able to judge for themselves.
For instance, there has been some campaign communication with accusations that I would like to evaluate based on the candidates' face-to-face responses. I would like to hear specifics about about how a $65 million obligation bond (Referendum 3) would be used, and what priorities each candidate has for South Miami. There are other issues, of course. If time allows, questions from the audience will be addressed.
On October 24th, I hope to see many of you at the Elks!
Hi Sally, thank you for doing this very important meeting for the community. Is there a way to broadcast it so others who can not attend could watch it on the community network or Zoom? It seems like whenever there is a community event like this, the same group of people attend and I beleive there others can not attend, but still want to be informed. It would be a big help for many here in SM since the "political speak" that the canidates are doing is rather confusing. The Mayor claims this referendum is for parks and infrastructure... but we know it's to rebuild Sunset Place or City Hall... seems to be hidden in the verbiage.
